Backlash over 4.2% ferry fares rise

Press and Journal – The Scottish Government was under fire last night after it announced ferry fares to west coast islands were increasing by an inflation-busting 4.2% later this month. Opposition politicians criticised Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson who claimed the move would protect services and ensure they continued to run efficiently.

A TAIN primary school does such a good job recycling waste that its binmen noticed how little they were collecting. A check was made and it was discovered that Knockbreck Primary recorded the lowest volume of rubbish per pupil in all the schools in the Highland Council area.

Press and Journal – A BUNGALOW on the Black Isle was badly damaged by a kitchen fire yesterday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze at East Watergate, Fortrose. The alarm was raised at 2.30pm after residents living several miles away reported a large plume of smoke coming from the building.

Four years for man who preyed on five-year-old

A man was sentenced to four years in jail at Dingwall Sheriff Court after committing lewd and indecent behaviour towards a 5-year-old boy.
Abdur Sadiq Mohammed, 26, was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register and had been recommended for deportation.

BBC – A man has been accused of shaking an infant and striking her to the danger of her life at Dingwall Sheriff Court. Derren MacLennan, 39, allegedly assaulted the two-month-old baby while she was in his care on 23 February in Tain.

Press and Journal – The Scottish Government’s environment agency yesterday ordered the removal of tonnes of rotting fishmeal from the port of Invergordon. The product, owned by fish food manufacturers Skretting, has been heaped on the shoreline since January 25 when it was dumped there after being hauled from a burning warehouse.
